Board of Education Standards

Illinios Learning Standards (ILS) require all school children in the state to achieve goals in seven key disciplines:

  • English Language Arts
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Science
  • Physical Development/Health
  • Fine Arts
  • Foreign Languages

    Each goal is defined by multiple learning standards (A,B,C and so on), and each standard is further defined by grade levels of Early Elementary(1), Late Elementary(2), Middle/Jr.High(3), Early High(4) and Late High school(5). Teachers who use the Daily Herald in their classroom have a powerful tool to achieve mastery of the subjects outlined in the goals that follow.

    English Language Arts (Goals 1 through 5) Reading, writing, listening, speaking and using language arts to acquire, assess and communicate. The Daily Herald can be used as a tool to reach all five LA goals, and the 13 underlying standards, across all five academic levels.

    Mathematics (Goals 6 through 10)

  • Goal 6 (Demonstrate and apply a knowledge and sense of numbers): Standard A (levels 1, 3); Standard C (level 4); Standard D (levels 2, 4, 5)
  • Goal 8 (Use algebraic and analytical methods): Standard B (levels 1, 2, 3); Standard D (level 4)
  • Goal 9 (Use geometric methods): Standard A (levels 2, 3)
  • Goal 10 (Collect, organize and analyze data): Standard A (level 2, 3); Standard B (level 3)

    Science (Goals 11 through 13)

  • Goal 11 (Understand the processes of scientific inquiry): Standard A (level 1, 3); Standard B (level 4)
  • Goal 12 (Understand the fundamental concepts, principles and interconnections of the life, physical and earth/space sciences): Standard A (level 2, 3, 4); Standard B (level 1, 4, 5); Standard C (level 1, 2); Standard E (Levels 1 through 5); Standard F (levels 1, 2, 3)
  • Goal 13 (Understand the relationships among science, technology and society): Standard A (level 4, 5); Standard B (level 3, 4, 5)

    Social Science (Goals 14 through 18)

  • Goal 14 (Understand political systems): 6 Standards, all levels
  • Goal 15 (Understand economic systesm): 5 Standards, all levels
  • Goal 16 (Understand events, trends, individuals and movements shaping history): Standard A (level 5); Standard B (levels 3, 4, 5); Standard C (levels 3, 5); Standard D (level 1)
  • Goal 17 (Understand world geography) 4 Standards, all levels
  • Goal 18 (Understand social systems) 3 Standards, all levels

    Physical Development/Health (Goals 19 through 24)

  • Goal 20 (Achieve health-enhancing physical fitness based on self-assessment): Standard A (levels 4, 5); Standard B (level 5); Standard C (levels 3, 4, 5)
  • Goal 22 (Understand principles of health promotion and prevention of illness/injury): 3 Standards, all levels
  • Goal 23 (Understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and development): Standard A (level 4); Standard B (levels 2, 3, 4, 5); Standard C (levels 2, 3, 4, 5)
  • Goal 24 (Promote health through communication and decision-making): 3 Standards, all levels

    Fine Arts (Goals 24 through 27)

  • Goal 27 (Understand the role of the arts in civilization): 2 Standards, all levels

    Foreign Languages (Goals 28 through 30)

  • Goals 28-30 relating to Spanish: Our sister publication, Reflejos, is appropriate to meeting all 3 goals.
  • Goal 29, any language (Use target language to understand customs, arts, literature, history and geography associated with it): Standards C, D, E, all levels
